      • Adopt a Dahlia

Adopt a Dahlia Scheme. Overlooking our Paddock where we grow the Dahlias is a Cottage. In the Cottage lived an elderly lady of 92 years Audrey Flecther. She had been ill for some time and was attended several times a day by carers and her son and daughter in law. I was growing a second year Seedling which I had liked. It is a Yellow on Yellow Micro Collarette with a low growth habit perfect for Garden beds and path borders. This Plant sprang into bloom on what would have been Audreys birthday just 2 days after she passed away. That day I saw Linda her Daughter in Law coming to tend the chickens at the cottage and asked her if she would look at this plant. I had decided to gift this to her family and name the flower in Audrey's memory. I Registered the Dahlia with the RHS as Audrey Flecther a Micro collarette and presented the certificate along with 6 plants during May of 2025 The Flecther's are eternally grateful for this and have made a small memorial Garden full of Audrey Flecther's. I had mentioned this to a customer Lisa who was desperate to get Kens Rarity. She wanted this as a memory of her late father Ken Shilton. I got the plants to her in May of 2025 and Ken bloomed successfully for her all Summer. I had said to her I grow many seedlings some are ugly ducklings but I get the occasional one which is worthy of growing again even though they might not have Exhibition grade potential. This stuck a chord with Lisa and I presented her with photos of what has become a RHS Registered Bronze Miniature Decorative named Ken Shilton. She will get plants during 2026 to endure Kens memory. Janet and I pondered this considerably when I told her that several customers were seeking the same or similar type of service. So now we are releasing details of our Adopt a Dahlia Scheme. Applicants can select a Dahlia from Photos supplied. Once the cultivar is selected we then register this with the RHS. During February to April of the following year we will collect and root cuttings from the mother tuber up to a maximum of 10. These along with the Mother tuber and Registration certificate are then supplied to the applicant in May as Garden Ready plants. The Applicant will own the entire stock of this cultivar which is completely unique to themselves. If you are interested.
